Career Ending Cover FAQs

Career Ending Insurance

What is Career Ending Insurance?

Career Ending Insurance is a policy designed to compensate you in the event of an injury or depending on cover, an accident or critical illness that means you can no longer pursue your sporting career. The policy pays out a lump sum in the event you can no longer play professional sports. The lump sum is usually tax-free.

What information is needed to get a quote?

Initially, to get a quote we require the following details:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Sport
  • Club
  • Current contract expiry date
  • Annual salary

The contract and salary details are required to determine what level of cover can be offered.

We will be able to provide you with a full and formal quotation, which will include a copy of the policy terms and conditions. This will also include details of applicable limitations and exclusions. The full documentation will allow you to make an informed decision as to whether the policy is suitable for you and whether you wish to proceed to purchase it. If you wish to go ahead with a policy, you will be required to complete a medical declaration in conjunction with your club doctor or GP.

How much cover can I obtain?

Primarily, the insurer will look at your age and contract details. From this they will determine an approximate appropriate level of cover they are able to offer. Our experienced team can advise on any questions you have.

How much does Career Ending Insurance cost?

The cost will vary dependent upon your age and the sport that you play. Our team would be happy to provide you with an indicative price. All policies can be paid in monthly instalments.

What if I have insurance through my club. How does it work?

If you take out your own career-ending policy, it would act as a ‘Top-Up’ to the insurance provisions of a central playing contract.

Many professional contracts include insurance provisions for payments to individuals who are unable to play or due to injury or illness. However, these may not be sufficient to provide for your long-term financial security so it is important to consider whether you have sufficient cover in place.

Does Career Ending Insurance cover concussions?

A concussion is not covered by career ending insurance where a career is prematurely curtailed due to cumulative (i.e., more than one) concussions. In some cases, if there is a single concussion event, cover may be provided but this would be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Does Career Ending Injury Insurance cover pre-existing injuries?

Any injury within the previous 36 months would be automatically excluded.

Once a medical proposal has been completed by the applicant the insurer will be able to confirm details of all applicable limitations and exclusions.
